Three oils almost anyone receiving them will already know by name — the box to give when you don't know which one they like.

• Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) — steam distilled from the flowering tops. Warm, nutty and herbaceous, with a sweetness that lingers.
• Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) — steam distilled from the leaves. Green, rosy and sweet-floral.
• Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) — steam distilled from the flowers. Intensely sweet and heady; long used in perfumery.

Four to six drops in a diffuser, or one drop on a tissue. Clary Sage is not recommended during pregnancy — seek professional advice.
